5 Bad Skin Habits

You love your skin and do the best that you can to nurture, protect and care for it . You even have a cabinets full of some of the best beauty products money can buy.

However, you may unknowingly be causing damage to your skin with some bad skin habits.

  1. Frowning

There’s a reason they are called frown lines. This bad skin habit can cause bad facial posture.  When you’re frowning your facial muscles become tense and lips pursed inevitably causing lines to appear on your face. Often times, we’re not even upset or even aware that we’re frowning. The sun shining bright or reading can cause us to frown unknowingly. Luckily the solution for this one is pretty simple, just be more aware. Wear sunglasses when you’re in the sun and try to be more conscious of your resting face.

  1. Not Applying Sunscreen

Sunscreen is essential if you want to stop the signs of aging. Infact, about 90% of wrinkles are the cause of sun exposure. That means you have a ton of control in regards to how well your skin ages or not.  Wear a sunscreen or a anti aging cream with SPF every day.  Consistency here is very important, even in the winter, on cloudy day or if you’re just running errands, be sure to apply sunscreen before you head outside.

  1. Eating Too Many Sweets

According to dermatologist, consuming excessive amounts of sugar can cause premature aging of the skin. A little known fact is that sugar actually attacks the collagen and elastin in your skin, causing  it to wrinkle and hang. The solution for this bad skin habit is simple, swap out the sweets with fruits, veggies and good fats for younger looking skin, longer.

  1. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Your entire body goes into repair mode while you sleep. This includes your skin. Therefore, little sleep means very little time for your skin to repair itself. Individuals who do not get enough sleep, have a hard time falling asleep, and/or constantly toss and turn are more likely to develop fine lines and wrinkles and lose skin elasticity, than those who consistently get a good night's rest. Kick this bad skin habit by getting a proper amount of sleep on a regular basis. Develop a schedule where you are able to get at least 7 hours of sleep and stick to it.

  1. Smoking

Smoking isn't just bad for your lungs, gums and teeth. It can have a negative impact on your skin as well. Pursing your lips while you inhale and when smoke gets in your yours leads to crows feet. Additionally, smoking can cause skin cancers as well as make your skin more susceptible to infection and acne scars.
