Skin Care Ingredient: Blue Tansy Oil

blue tansy oil skin care ingredient

Blue tansy oil, also referred to as Moroccan Chamomile or Moroccan Tansy, comes from a flower found in North Africa that is known for its potent health and healing benefits. When the leaves and flowers of this powerful flower are distilled and made into an essential oil, it packs a powerful punch for a wide variety of ailments. Since medieval times, blue tansy oil has been used as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and sedative. Recent discovery has uncovered numerous benefits for skin, leading many natural cosmetic companies to begin incorporating blue tansy oil into daily moisturizers, night oils, and facial repair serums.

Although similar in name, many confuse this dark blue, sweet-smelling oil with Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) oil, which has a strong fern scent and can be lethal in high doses.

Antibacterial

For such a mild oil, it may be surprising to hear blue tansy oil has antibacterial properties. This oil takes on bacteria, killing it and preventing bacteria cells from multiplying. Acne is caused, in part, from bacteria that has made its way to your skin. Using blue tansy oil kills acne-causing bacteria, preventing acne from developing or spreading. It’s also known for suppressing the spread of secondary infections. Tansy oil also contributes to the healing of scrapes, cuts, or burns that may be present on skin tissue.

Antifungal

When exposed to this oil, the spores of the fungus are destroyed, making it an ideal preventive oil against any kind of fungus. Not limited to facial tissue, this fungus-killing oil is greatly beneficial for ingrown or discolored nails and scalp ailments when applied directly to the skin.

Anti-inflammatory

Eczema and dermatitis, which are both common skin conditions, can be controlled with consistent use of blue tansy oil thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Anti-inflammatories help reduce and even remove flare-ups that may cause red, irritated and puffy skin. These anti-inflammatory benefits can also help in muscle relief, relieving aches and pains associated with working out or merely effects of old age.

Relaxation

Relaxation is a key component to healthy-looking skin.  When stress is present, bodies release the stress hormone cortisol, which can speed up the aging process with the appearance of sun spots, crow’s feet, fine lines, and frown lines.

The soothing scent of blue tansy oil has been described as a sweet, complex, slightly-floral smell with herbaceous undertones. The depth of the aroma is known to create calming effect that help people relax, slow down, and feel calm. It has been shown to even help with emotional issues like anxiety, nerves, and even mild depression by creating a sense of peace and balance in the brain.

To take advantage of blue tansy oil’s relaxing properties, one can expel the aroma using an oil diffuser, adding it to massage oils before application, and mixing a couple drops with a night cream then applying before bed. Or, look for this ingredient in cosmetics and natural health products.
