Fighting Back Against Dry Skin

Your skin is your body's greatest defense when it comes to protecting it from the elements. When harsh winter weather, the sun or other elements leave your skin itchy or dry, don’t just cover it up. Revitalize your skin by taking the right steps to repair it.

In order to get the silky smooth skin you desire, discover the top three causes of dry skin and how to repair it. .

  1. The Problem: Harsh Winter Weather

When the weather takes a turn for the cold and the temperature in your city begins to drop, so does the humidity. Dry air can leave your skin parched, dry and itchy. Turning up the thermostat won't help your skin, either. As dermatologist everywhere agree that indoor heating kills even more moisture from the air and your skin.

The Solution: Dial Up the Humidity

Try installing a humidifier in your home, this will keep the air moist. The humidity level should be set between 45% and 55%, while you’ll want to set the temperature to be at about 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additionally, it’s important to create a barrier of moisture for your skin before you step outside. One of the easiest ways to do this is to be sure to apply a daily face cream or moisturizer with SPF every day - even if it isn’t sunny outside. Once you have properly moisturized, be sure to wear protective clothing such as gloves, hats, and scarves to shield your skin from harsh weather conditions.

  1. The Problem: Steamy Showers

As much as we love them, long hot showers are a big no-no if you’re wanting to keep your skin moisturized. While the steam may feel soothing to your body, it actually dries out your skin's natural oils. Additionally, it’s important to note that long showers can cause dry skin as well.

The Solution: Take Faster, Cooler Showers

Turn down the temperature of your showers and keep them short. Dermatologist recommended 5 minute showers, which is just long enough to properly cleanse the skin, without drying it out.

  1. The Problem: Harsh Soaps

All body washes and soap bars are not created equal. In fact, many body washes and soap bars can be extremely harsh. Harsh soaps strip away your skin's natural moisture, leaving it dry and  sensitive.

The Solution: Use A Mild Soap

To avoid drying your skin out when cleansing, try switching to a mild and fragrance-free body and/or facial wash. Typically these moisturize the skin they cleanse. Whether you prefer bar or liquid soap, is fine - just be sure to use on that is formulated for dry skin especially.
